Whether you get a baby boy or baby girl depends on one simple fact. The sperm, and not the ovum, carries the genetic material called chromosome X or chromosome Y that determine the sex of the baby. The ovum always carries the X chromosome. When the sperm carrying a Y chromosome unites with the ovum, a fertilized ovum with a XY chromosome combination is produced and we get a baby boy. On the other hand, when the sperm carrying an X chromosome unites with the ovum from the female, a fertilized ovum with an XX combination is produced and we get a baby girl. But, it was discovered that nature is a little more complex in gender selection.
